点评：This recent thank you card from American visitors to a house volunteer beautifully illustrates what makes a visit to Chawton House a unique experience even on a very rainy day:
"June 11th 2025, Dear ...., my daughter Olivia and I cannot thank you enough for your kindness in rescuing us from the front steps of Chawton House last Saturday. Not only did we arrive dry @ Alton Station, our knowledge of the area increased tenfold. So thank you for not only shepherding us to the station but also for the wonderful tour along the way. This made for one of the best memories of our trip. With gratitude, ......"
Because CH has it all - it's been a warm spirited, family home for 500 years, with amazing history and artefacts - wonderful grounds (dogs welcome); regularly changing exhibitions celebrating the largely unacknowledged contribution of women to our society; a very close link with one of the most famous authors of all time; AND a great kitchen cafe.
It's at the end of a no-through road, but there's plenty of parking at the top of the drive (and some disabled parking behind the house itself if you phone in advance) so THIS should be your first port of call when you come to Chawton ... and yes, do by all means pop in to JA's cottage if you have time afterwards?!
