Rahr-West Is an Amazing Art Museum

点评：We headed to Manitowoc to check out the Sputnik remnant that fell in town many years ago. That led us to the Rahr-West Museum and Mansion. This gorgeous museum not only has the Sputnik history but an amazing art collection and a restored mansion. There is free off-street parking at the museum. The outside grounds are beautifully landscaped and cared for -- gorgeous gardens. There are some interesting sculptures on the outside grounds. There is a small monument acknowledging the area where the Sputnik piece fell in Manitowoc. There is actually a marking in the street where it actually hit. We went inside to discover an amazing art collection and a restored historical mansion. There was no fee to enter though donations were encouraged. We were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable docent who told us about the museum and other sites in the area. We toured the facility on our own at our own pace. When we visited, there was a special exhibition of works focused on animals. Then a separate gallery had a number of pieces from Picasso, Warhol, O'Keefe, Calder, Dali, and Johns to name a few. Other displays honor local artists. There is a replica of the Sputnik chunk also on display in the museum. The museum also has a section with gifts and one display had paintings for sale. Rahr-West was an unexpected find. It is worthy of a visit on a day trip to Manitowoc.
