点评:High in the mountains of Northern Luzon, the Ifugao Rice Terraces stand as a powerful testament to the harmony between people and nature. Carved into steep slopes over 2,000 years ago, these terraces are not just an agricultural system—they are a living cultural landscape shaped by generations of indigenous knowledge, resilience, and community cooperation.
Batad is the most spectacular among the 5 rice terraces that are part of Unesco World Heritage. Batad Rice Terraces feel almost otherworldly. Shaped like a vast natural amphitheater, they wrap around the mountains in perfect curves, creating a breathtaking harmony of form and function. Isolated and accessible only on foot, Batad has preserved not just its terraces but also the rhythm of traditional Ifugao life. Here, every step along the narrow paths tells a story of endurance, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the land. It’s not just a view—it’s an experience of living heritage.
The walk across the rise fields is pretty strenuous and it is required to visit with a local guide. There are a few guest houses for those who would like to stay overnight. No cellular coverage, but it is possible to use local WiFi for a small fee.
Reaching Batad is not so easy. From Manila the main alternatives are either a night bus or a flight to Cauayan and then about 4 hours by narrow mountain roads. We were helped by AJ Gudda, a local residen and a great driver in organizing our visit to Batad and to the other main rice terraces in the surrounding villages.
