A wonderful collection, poorly curated
National Institute of Archaeology with Museum的点评
点评:In many respects, this is one of the greatest archeological museums in Bulgaria, with outstanding collections of Roman and Hellenic artefacts. The treasury on the 2nd floor contains the most incredible collection of Thracian gold and silver that would be a crime to omit from any holiday itinerary.
However, the museum suffers from one very big fail, namely the lack of contextual information. Each item has a label and most have english versions but you have a sense of simply skipping from one display case to another with no clarity where items were found, what culture they belong to and little confidence how they are linked anthropologically, geographically or technically. This is a bizarre failure of curation, not only because it reduces a world standard collection to a cabinet of curiosities but also because most other similar museums in Bulgarian are assiduous in displaying contextual panels and meticulously ordering their items by era and culture.
