Unforgettable Moremi Safari – the real way.

点评：Our group of eight from India experienced a most memorable eight days Mobile Camp Safari in Moremi Game Reserve (Botswana) with Royale Wilderness Mobile Safari Company, Maun from 9th to 16th September 2025. The rustic and wild charm of a mobile camp is a most exciting and unique experience of the wilderness for any wildlife enthusiast.
Not many mobile camp operators will venture into Moremi because of the serious challenges posed by the Okavango Delta with its risky water-ways crossings. But our expert Safari Guides with their intimate knowledge of Moremi did a fantastic job. We have very special words of appreciation for our Safari Guide CJ (Chika Simon Junior). He left no stone unturned to get us to the best and most exciting wildlife experiences. We will remember his amiable and cheerful nature, his genuine love for the denizens of the wild and tremendous safari expertise.
During our stay in Moremi (3 nights in Xakanaxa and 3 nights in Xinii BOGA Campsites) and the safari drives in those areas, we saw more than sixty lions, including cubs, belonging to five different prides (namely, Budumatau, First Bridge, Xinii, Blackpool and South Gate prides), two packs of wild-dogs (one with more than 50 dogs and another about 30 dogs), three leopard sightings, a family of four cheetahs, many elephants, cape buffaloes, impalas, zebras, greater kudus, red lechwes, spotted hyenas, waterbucks, hippos, black-bearded blue wildebeests, south african giraffes, wart-hogs, ostriches, tsessebes, steenboks, nile crocodiles, chakma baboons, vervet monkeys and other animals along with ground hornbills, kori bustards, vultures, marabou storks, eagles, helmeted guinea-fowls, spur fowls, hornbills and large flocks of a variety of birds near the innumerable water-bodies. And all these encounters were very exciting being fairly in close proximity of the animals and, in some instances, of animals on their kills. Our Guides always expertly positioned our safari vehicles for the best photo opportunities. The land cruiser safari vehicles were in top condition, which is crucial for a Moremi Safari with its challenging terrain. We were happy to see not many safari vehicles crowding important sightings --- which we often experienced in our previous safaris in Ngogrongoro Crater National Park, Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park, especially during the peak season.
Both our BOGA (Botswana Guide Association) Campsites at Xakanaxa and Xinii were extremely well-situated near large water-bodies and visited by a variety of animals, such as, elephants, red lechwes, impalas, zebras and hippos even during broad daylight and also by hyenas and lions during the night. To mention, for instance, one of our experiences at Xinii. While dining around 8 pm we saw in our spot-light a herd of over 50 red lechwes running panic-stricken for about one hour from one side to the other in the very large swampy reeds area in front of our Camp and elephants trumpeting. We understood that lions were on the hunt. Sure enough, early following morning we found the spoors of a large lion pride around the camp-site and saw 16 members of Xinii Pride resting in the shade 300 meters from our Camp. They were not successful in their lechwe hunt that evening. But later that day we found the pride feasting on a wart-hog kill.
During our safari drives, we passed by Blackpool BOGA Campsite and we found that area most richly endowed with a variety of wildlife and birds. If we do visit Moremi again, we will surely target Blackpool Camp-site -- for which booking is required to be made more than a year in advance due to great demand. We also enjoyed a 3-hour boat ride from Ngami Marine Boat Station in one of the permanent channels of Okavango Delta visiting the small but impressive heronry on Ngagigwa Island. We were however not lucky enough to spot the elusive sitatunga antelope.
The Mobile Camps at Xakanaxa and Xinii were efficiently managed in every respect by Royale Wilderness Safari Team. Chef Cynthia is a wonderful person who did her best to cook us some delicious vegetarian Indian cuisine and tasty bakery products freshly baked in wilderness style. The dining tables were very well-laid out in the large dining tent overlooking the very scenic wilderness. The spacious sahara style tents with two well-furnished beds, solar rechargeable lights and ensuite bucket-shower toilets made us quite comfortable. The only issue was with mid-day temperatures hovering around 35 degrees celsius which made resting inside the tents quite difficult. Those preferring cooler weather should consider visiting Moremi in August when temperatures will be cooler and wildlife sightings also very good.
Last but not least we are grateful to our Tour Operator, Safari Frank for professionally and expertly organising our Moremi Safari from start to end.
