点评:We (30+ group of opera goers) went to see La Boheme on Wed, October 22nd at Glyndebourne. The meal before the opera in Middle and Upper Wallop was very enjoyable and the music and performances of the soloists were excellent as usual. However, the set which is usually in a French Garrett was staged instead in a deserted street in Paris. This made the libretto totally discordant with the scenery; e.g. when Rodolpho, the poet is writing poetry he has nowhere to sit/write because he is in a street! He is given an easel instead. When he later invites Mimi to come in out of the cold, he just takes her a couple of paces further along the street! When later he tells her to lie down on the bed to keep warm as she is very ill, there wasn't a bed. She actually lay down in the gutter on top of a pile of snow!!
We (30+ of us in a group) did wonder whether the stage director had ever listened to the words of the music or even read the libretto! It made it difficult for the audience to imagine being in the story which sadly spoilt the opera for us. Why do some producers think they need to deviate from the intended plot and story?
