A Bucolic Escape Just Outside Bordeaux

点评：Located about 20 km from Bordeaux, this château is a more convenient base for visiting the city, the Bassin d’Arcachon and Cap Ferret, rather than dedicating your time to the Saint-Émilion area.
It is worth noting that the property extends across a vast estate, where you can also stay in charming cabins or lodges set around a small lake and within the woods. The atmosphere is very bucolic, though not entirely clear from the website’s description.
Some rooms are inside the château itself, which features spacious, beautifully furnished halls, while others are located in a newly and tastefully renovated extension of the building, offering modern and very well-appointed accommodation. Our room had only one drawback: the Velux windows had no blackout blinds, so despite the curtains, the morning light peeked in as soon as dawn broke.
Housekeeping was impeccable, and breakfast on the first day was delightful. Unfortunately, breakfast on the second and third days was a completely different story: perhaps due to a change of staff, the service was absolutely inadequate, with disorganization, a lack of attention, and a noticeable drop in quality compared to the first day. In addition, the fact that breakfast was open to all in the same space created crowding, long waits, and sometimes even slightly folkloric – and at times embarrassing – situations.
The restaurant, on the other hand, is very good, offering interesting dishes and, of course, the estate’s wines, which are truly worth tasting in all their richness and depth. The welcome was kind, though occasionally interrupted by the requests of other guests.
All in all, one should be well aware of the nature of this place: varied and bucolic, especially if staying for several nights. Château Léognan is not so much a hotel to choose as a base for visiting the surroundings, but rather a retreat to be experienced and enjoyed, immersed in nature yet only a short drive from Bordeaux.
