点评：Rio Negro Palace. was the former home of eccentric German rubber baron Waldemar Scholz, the Palácio Rio Negro was built in 1903 during the ‘rubber boom’ with material brought from Europe. Just the Scholz couple habited the house with 27 servants and sent their laundry to Paris. Considering it took 7 months each way by boat to cross the Atlantic, makes you think how many sets of clothing they had to have until the laundry was returned.
The palace is known for its stunning architectural style, which combines elements of French Neo-classical and Art Nouveau design. The exterior features intricate ironwork, decorative arches, and a grand entrance staircase. The interior is equally impressive, with ornate chandeliers, marble floors, and frescoed ceilings. In addition to its architectural importance, the palace also has historical significance. It served as a residence for several Brazilian presidents and government officials during the early 20th century. Today, it is a cultural heritage site. Entering by the lobby an impressive staircase leads you to 1st floor, turning left leads in to the music room where the Scholzs’ entertained other rubber barons. Most of the other rooms are now restored with relics and mementos of the original house. The balcony at the back of the house overlooks a walled garden with Rio Negra river in the background. While on the balcony Amazon parrots are seen and heard, turkey vultures as well as other Amazonian birds.
It now hosts temporary art exhibits and occasional concerts and performances in the eclectic main house. Other buildings contain a fine art gallery, a ho-hum coin museum and a sound-and-image museum.
