点评:I came to visit Van Castle (Van Kalesi) on my own — and I genuinely regret it.
Let me be very clear: there is no visible official entrance, no signs, no working ticket office, no people to ask, and the whole area feels like a ghost town.
I tried accessing the site from both sides — near the Atatürk Park and across from the Archaeological Museum.
In both cases, I encountered abandoned paths, stray dogs, fences with holes instead of gates, and absolutely zero information about where or how to buy a ticket.
Even locals couldn’t help. Some even pointed me to jump fences or enter through illegal paths.
One path led me straight to a massive stray dog, larger than me. It could’ve ended badly.
There is no map, no online location showing where the real ticket entrance is. I walked in circles for over an hour, and still couldn’t find any official point of entry.
At 8am on a Sunday, there was no staff, no sign that anything would open. People kept telling me “maybe at 10am,” but the problem is — there is no place TO open.
The entire area looks like a construction site or abandoned military zone.
If you’re a solo traveler — especially a woman — I strongly advise against going here without a guide or local who knows the way. It feels unsafe and frustrating, and the lack of infrastructure is shocking for a place that claims to be a “historical site.”
I really hope the authorities fix this.
Until then — avoid.
