点评:Yesterday, my wife and I joined a group visiting the garden at Netherhall Manor. The owner, Timothy Clark, is an expert and author on historic garden plants. He personally showed us around his beautiful walled garden, and enthralled us with the back-stories of his collection of plants cultivated since Tudor times. We were shown rare crown imperials, primroses and tulips with features we had never seen before.
The garden visit was followed by a captivating talk by his colleague, David about early keyboard instruments, focusing on the Longman & Broderip square piano, which has stood in the house since it was new – in the late 18th Century. David’s knowledge and enthusiasm ranges from medicine and music to electronics and architecture.
Finally we were treated to a “full English” tea in the Manor’s lounge with its beamed ceiling, and surrounded by period furniture. We were served with delicious home-made sandwiches and cakes. What’s not to like?
We thoroughly recommend a visit to Netherhall Manor. We will be back for another look at the garden in a different season.
