点评:Murray Rose Pool is a large, open-air, ocean-water swimming area. Unlike most of Sydney’s ocean pools which are carved into headlands, this is less a pool and more a fenced off section of the harbour beach.
Enclosed by shark-net fencing, you can swim, safely protected from boats, sharks and any other unpleasant aquatic creature.
My favourite feature of the pool is the elevated boardwalk that wraps around it. Even if you’re not daring enough to jump yourself, watching kids take flying leaps off into the water is always fun.
I also like the two floating pontoons. I’ve often seen these overseas but they are not common at Sydney beaches. On a quiet day, it’s lovely to swim out to them and lie in the sun while being gently rocked by the water.
Often we sit on the sand, but on our recent visit, we spread our towels out on the grassy slopes leading down to the sand where we could see the yachts and boats in the bay and the distinctive green and gold Manly ferry making its way across the harbour.
It’s just such a scenic spot to relax and enjoy.
In early January, the water is a beautiful temperature but it was rather dark and weedy the day we were there. I’ve noticed that it does get a bit of weed here from time to time.
Facilities here are good, with change-rooms, a toilet block, showers and the Redleaf Cafe.
TIPS FOR GETTING HERE:
* Parking is the one disadvantage here. Street parking is limited and the council carpark above the pool is limited to 30 minutes which makes it pretty much useless if you want to spend any time at all swimming and relaxing.
* The pool is not immediately obvious from the road. What you’re looking for is Redleaf House, the historic home that is now the Woollahra Council building. A long flight of steep stairs alongside the building lead down to the beach and pool.
* It's worth noting that although the pool is formally known as The Murray Rose Pool, it’s almost always referred to locally as ‘Redleaf’.
