点评:We'd been driving over the New River Gorge Bridge and viewing it from the visitor's center for years. We decided that this was the year we would do the drive and view the bridge from below. First a little information I got from their brochure. "Fayette Station Road was the main travel route for vehicles in this area for nearly 100 years and wound from the top of the gorge to the river and back. The gorge was a busy industrial center for almost 80 years, a boom time that was ushered in by the 1873 completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Over 100 busy coal and railroad towns once dotted the landscape. Two towns flanked the New River here, Fayette and South Fayette. A vehicle bridge connected these two communities in 1889. Coal was mined and trains constantly ran during this industrial boom that slowed by the 1960s. This bridge was closed and condemned after the completion of the New River Gorge Bridge in 1977. A replica of the original bridge opened in 1998 and is now part of the scenic drive along this historic route."
The road is for the most part one way except at the beginning and end. It's really winding so you have to go slow but you'll want to to sightsee. There are walking trails that lead off from it (one goes to the Kaymoor Mine). About halfpoint is a parking area with restrooms. We had beautiful weather and spent time watching people enjoying the water. Altogether a great experience. It was fun imagining yourself back in time using the road.
