The Engine House was excellent, the centre was disappointing.

First we had to wrestle with the decision whether to pay the exorbitant parking fee or go somewhere else with free parking. We wanted to see the winding engine working so, reluctantly we paid. Next we went into the centre for a coffee and a tea. We would have had a cake or biscuit but the money had gone on the parking fee. Someone said that the milk had run out in the vending machine. We were given an unpleasant display of surliness by the gentleman behind the counter as he had to refill the milk. We managed to order our expensive vending machine drinks without causing too much inconvenience to the gentleman, and sat down to enjoy them. Oh dear! The vended coffee was far too strong and the UHT milk made my tea taste foul. So we just left our drinks and walked.
So can we say anything positive about our experience? Well the scale model of the incline in the centre was excellent. The toilets were ok.
The best bit was the Middleton Top Engine house. It was fascinating. The volunteers we really friendly and helpful. We could have talked engines for hours. They explained everything so clearly, and the engine was beautifully looked after. Thank you for making our trip worthwhile.
So 5 stars for the engine house experience and zero for the Visitor centre.
We'll going there again tomorrow but we'll take our own food and drinks.
