点评：This is a typical New England brick mill built in 1823 and used as a mill until 1969. It is largely unaltered and you can see a lot of the original construction. During the Civil War, the mill changed from a weaving mill to a knitting mill. Hosiery was made here. This was particularly interesting to us because we have never seen a knitting factory before. There are still many knitting machines in the building and we got a good feel for how they work. A lot of the machinery was produced locally and there were other knitting mills nearby. There is also a Powerhouse within the museum with very good information and a lot of equipment to see. This mill started using water power to turn the wheels. It converted to producing electricity to run the plant during World War I; the extra electricity produced was used in the City of Laconia. A lot of the wheels are sill in place and you can see openings in the floor which show where the water ran through the building to power the mill.
Maggie gave us an excellent tour; there are also videos and wall signs which give a lot of information. Laconia was an industrial city and is now in the middle of the Lakes Region which is a big recreation area. It was very interesting to see this remaining piece of history which employed a lot of people and produced goods used by many more. Most people would probably spend 1-2 hours here. A lot of the area around the mill is now a park adjacent to the river and is a very pleasant place. We had no trouble finding a parking space.
