A glorious temple of sparkling wine

点评：Ever since we became winos 20+ years ago, we've enjoyed Gruet's affordable, high-quality sparkling wines, which are widely distributed in restaurants and shops. As major fans of New Mexico, we dreamed of one day finding ourselves at Gruet Winery in the flesh.
It took longer than expected, but this year, it finally happened. When we needed to get away for a four-day weekend this Memorial Day for the sake of our sanity, it was a no-brainer to spend it in Albuquerque hiking, dining, and tasting wine.
Don't be fooled by the cheesy '80s-inspired exterior; this building is a sacred temple of sparkling wine. And, much to our surprise, they also offer a number of still wines. They're OK, but you're here for the stunningly crafted, elegant sparklers anyway.
If memory serves, Gruet offers two sparkling flights: one with their standard bubbles (white and rose) and another featuring reserve bottles. We got one of each and shared the samples. Unlike many wineries that only give you a few drips of vino, these were three-ounce pours of our different wines. Yes, you basically get two glasses of wine in each flight. Plan accordingly! We got a little more tipsy than expected before lunch.
We got to enjoy the patio by ourselves, as it was before noon. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly, and because we were one of the few visitors at the time, we were able to learn much about where their grapes are grown and about the history of the brand, which has its roots in France.
If you're a wino, too, and love sparkling wine, don't just visit if you're in Albuquerque. Go to Albuquerque to experience Gruet up close like we did.
