Douse yourself in mosquito repellant. Repeat.

点评：This was a return visit to the Hunter Wetland Centre for me while visiting from interstate. Wow, what a difference the season makes. It was a rather grey afternoon visit - perhaps that’s why the mosquitoes were so voraciously hungry. Even the briefest pause in walking resulted in being surrounded by a cloud of buzzing mozzies. The bare skin on the back of my hands was attacked as I tried to use my binoculars making bird observing very uncomfortable. An offer of insect repellent from the volunteer cashier as I set out would have been very helpful. I was however advised, not about the mosquitoes, but that the centre closed at 16:00 and could I please aim to be leaving at 15:45. I had arrived at 14:00. I re-entered the visitor centre some 5km of walking later at 15:43 to be berated by a gentleman for being the last visitor to leave. I understand that the centre is run by volunteers but the haranguing that I received because he wanted to go home was over the top. I can understand the issues with volunteer staffing but I had returned at the nominated time and 15 minutes prior to closing! So my recommendations are to wear long sleeves and trousers, douse yourself in insect repellent and repeat that, aim to exit 30 minutes prior to closing time and if pressed for time avoid the mangrove boardwalk and remnant rain forest at the end of the property. Although both are lovely your time is better spent around the lagoons - you can see the rainforest on the beautiful walk to Leichhardt’s Lookout. Highlights were Magpie Geese, Wandering Whistling Ducks, Australasian Shovelers, Red-browed Finches plus the usual array of teals, cormorants, swans, herons and ibis. Low points were the mosquitoes and less than pleasant gentleman who just wanted to get home!
