点评:The Landing a true gem in Minnesota! We go several times a year, and each time we feel enriched by the experience. Many Minnesotans may remember The Landing as “Murphy’s Landing” and probably even went there for a field trip in elementary school. It is now owned by the Three Rivers Park District, thus the name change. While tours are no longer regularly offered, the grounds are free to wander all year, and many paid events, including tours, are offered via the website. Folkways of the Holidays during Christmastime is one of the most popular events. For non-event days, the buildings are all closed, but guests are invited to take a self-guided tour and read the informational placards outside many of the buildings. In addition each month different objects (such as an apple in September) are hidden in the buildings, and guests are encouraged to peer through the windows to find them while also getting a glimpse of the furnishings inside.
Visitors will start in the “Eagle Creek Village” representing a 19th century town. There are so many unique and historic buildings in this part alone including a church, town hall, general store, and many different family homes. On a quiet afternoon you can sit in the gazebo, look around and really feel like you’ve been transported back in time-it’s one of my favorite things! The village is also the most guest-friendly area with modern bathrooms in a temperature-controlled building (made to look like a barn.) Here you will also get beautiful views of the Minnesota River.
If all you do is walk around the Eagle Creek Village, it’s worth your visit, but there is also so much more to explore. A short walk down a dirt road will lead you past the ruins of the old Murphy’s Inn and to the 1889 Farm. Here you will see a farmhouse, barn, and sheep and cows graze the pastures from May-November. The schoolhouse is also located near this farm.
Next up is the 1857 homestead. This has a house and many outpost buildings as well as pigs. It’s a great way to see a self-sustaining farm, and appreciate all the work early immigrants to Minnesota put into building a life here.
The last stop is the 1845 Fur Trade Post. It’s a great example of early architecture in the area and Minnesota’s history with the fur trade. Near The Landing is Memorial Park where there are Native American burial mounds. While the heritage park highlights immigration and European settlements, it’s important to remember the area was used by Native Americans first.
Overall The Landing is a wealth of historical information and buildings. Unfortunately over the years we’ve noticed a decline in events offered, maintained buildings, and social media presence from this heritage park which leads me to believe it may be struggling with funding. Going to paid events or making a donation are some ways to help ensure The Landing continues into the future!
Some visitor tips: For little kids there is quite a bit of walking (1-2 miles) so you may want a stroller. An apiary for honey bees is on the outskirts of the village (close to the ruins.) While the bees aren’t aggressive, it’s something to note if someone in your group has a bee allergy.
Bring your camera there are lots of good photo opportunities here!
