点评:With a little patience—and polarized sunglasses—we spotted 20 sea turtles eating moss and lounging in the shallow, clear waters here. Guests were quiet and gave the turtles respectful distance, nothing like the loud clamoring crowds at the Black Sand Beach. There was always at least one park ranger on hand with binoculars to assist turtle seekers and answer questions. The visitor center and main parking area seem new and well maintained. It’s a good idea to bring sturdy water shoes with a grippy sole so you can venture out into the shallow, rocky areas of shore where the turtles gather.
Pro tip: If you’re not up for the 1 mile hike to the shoreline from the visitors’ center, go back out to the highway, head south and turn right at the next signal. Take the first right (you’ll be in the harbor parking area among trucks with boat trailers) and follow the road to the end. Opposite the boat launch is another entrance to the park where a 3-minute, partially shaded walk will take you to the beach. If it’s a warm day, walking down from the visitor center among all that dark lava rock with no shade will be very hot!
