点评:Did not do the trolley tour because it costs $19 a person, and read that the commentary is automated. Even if it had a live guide, tea bushes are not all that interesting to look at. Imagine many large non-flowering azalea bushes, planted in tight rows, and you'll have a very good idea of what a tea farm looks like.
To see the gift shop, to go on the video tour of the processing equipment (which was not in use when I was there, on a weekday, so I wonder if it is a working display later in the season), and to use the bathrooms (which needed cleaning) was all free.
The video tour does a good job of explaining how tea is grown and processed; the production looks like it could have been made 30 years ago, and it leaves out a lot of info, eg how are flavored teas made, how much of the tea sold by Bigelow comes from leaves grown in the US, etc. The video tour lasts about 8-10 minutes.
The gift shop sells cutsey kitchen-y stuff. I saw only one tea ball for sale--maybe because most of Bigelow teas are in bags? I was expecting many more items that would be tea-related, but no. I was expecting a wall filled with every different kind of Bigelow tea that's for sale, but no. My supermarket offers more varieties of Bigelow tea.
They do offer free tea, and it is help-yourself, so that's nice, and they have free mild available for the tea, so that's nice, too. Unfortunately, I think ALL the teas for tasting had been over-brewed, as every single one of them was bitter. From my own tea-drinking experience, tea doesn't get bitter from sitting out after having been brewed. Had I not already been a fan of Bigelow tea, I would never buy Bigelow tea based on what they offered.
The highlight of the visit, and I am being totally sincere, was the stinkhorn fungus growing near the porch. I have never seen, or smelled, stinkhorn fungus before, and they are truly stinky and creepily beautiful. I am so appreciative that they were allowed to stay were they are, despite their stink.
