Located at 4001 North Clark Street, at the intersection of Clark and Irving Park Road, north of Wrigley Field, in the Uptown neighborhood, the 121-acre property is the burial site of many well-known Chicagoans and features many tombs and monuments of great architectural or artistic significance. Graceland is a large historic garden that includes a naturalistic reflecting lake, surrounded by winding pathways, and its pastoral plantings have led the cemetery to become a certified arboretum of more than 2,000 trees. Established in 1860, Graceland features a wide variety of burial monuments designed by famous architects such as Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who are buried in the cemetery. Among the magnificent monuments are the Getty Tomb, the Martin Ryerson Mausoleum, the Potter Palmer and Bertha Honore Palmer Mausoleum, the Schoenhofen Pyramid Mausoleum, the George Pullman grave site, the William Hulbert monument, Daniel Burnham's burial island and two statues by renowned Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft, Eternal Silence for the Dexter Graves family plot and The Crusader that marks editor and publisher Victor Lawson's final resting place. Pick up a copy of the cemetery's map that pinpoints the grave sites of many famous people, including Philip Armour, Ernie Banks, Roger Ebert, Marshall Field, boxing champions Bob Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson, Cyrus McCormick, Joseph Medill and Minnie Minoso. Graceland was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
