Raccoon Mountain Dam的点评
点评：After learning that the Incline was booked, and the Cat Cafe was too, we took advice to visit a lake supported by an 8,500 foot dam up on Raccoon Mountain. The sights were spectacular, the visitor's center informative and interesting, and we met a TVA employee that engaged us in great conversation. She was from Chattanooga, had moved to Nashville, and then was relocated with the TVA to Raccoon Mountain.
It is a giant version of our (Massachusetts) Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage facility. It draws water from the Tennessee River and pumps it atop a 1,700 foot mountain to the man made reservoir that can hold 107,000,000,000 US gallons of water.
The Raccoon Mountain project is TVA’s largest hydroelectric facility and is a little unique. Water is pumped to the reservoir on top of the mountain during periods of low demand and then used to generate electricity when additional power is needed. The pumped-storage plant is located in southeast Tennessee on a site that overlooks the Tennessee River downstream of Chattanooga.
The plant works like a large storage battery: during periods of low demand, water is pumped from Nickajack Reservoir at the base of the mountain to the reservoir built at the top. It takes 28 hours to fill the upper reservoir. When demand is high, water is released from a tunnel that is drilled through the center of the mountain; the falling water drives the generators in the underground the power plant.
It was a beautiful afternoon with a great view of Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga.
