The first half of the play was acceptable.
After intermission, the second half was....read on.
The model ship, the storm video, lightenings and thunder were interpretive. All related to the story line. Every thing else was chaotic and superfluous to the plot. I noticed that an elderly man sitting nearby was sleeping head down, eyes closed during most of the second of the play. I suppose he put his hearing aid on noise cancellation.
The “interpretative” distractive SHEEP TRICK music, dance, pickpocket, FURRIES, DEI ruined the play for me and many others. It made the play longer than necessary and lacked any substance to the moral intent of jealousy, redemption and forgiveness conveyed by Shakespeare. Many empty seats. Prices outrageously high.
This repertory cast do not have compatible abilities. The set was spare and has been inadequate for the last few years. Costumes were ridiculous.
For a few years now, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater has failed to live up to the legacy of Barbara Gaines. Please
