点评:Not surprisingly there are a lot of Shakespeare-related statues and monuments in Stratford-upon-Avon.
On Henley Street there are two - a life-size bronze statue of William Shakespeare at one end this fun statue of the Jester at the other end.
The Jester or Fool, is one of Shakespeare classic and recurring characters. Here, he is dancing and grinning and looking like he might leap right off his pedestal.
However there is always a little bit more to Shakespeare’s jesters than meets the eye. There’s always a duality - comedy/drama, joy/sorrow, wit/wisdom.
The statue reflects this. The jester holds two masks. One is a happy, smiling face, but behind his back, he also holds a tragic mask.
Various quotes from Shakespeare’s plays are inscribed around the base. Two are from As You Like It which features Touchstone as the court jester.
NOTE: The Jester is best seen when visiting Shakespeare's Birthplace which is also on Henley Street.
