点评:Built in 1895-6, the Beehive is a classic Adelaide landmark, located on the corner of King William Street and Rundle Mall. It’s a very distinctive Gothic-styled building with three storeys, red and cream striped stonework, elaborate cast-iron balconies and railings, a row of almost church-like steeples running along the roofline and, best of all, a beehive shaped turret on the corner with a giant golden bee at the very top.
There’s a long history of bees here. The original ‘Bee Hive’ was a drapery and linen store established in the 1840s but what you see here today was built in 1895.
What brings most people here is the original Haighs chocolate shop. This is where Alfred Haigh started making and selling the now famous chocolates in 1915. During the WWI war years when rationing and lack of supplies made chocolate-making difficult, he made boiled sweets and toffees instead for the soldiers.
The business is still family run.
We stopped by and did a small tasting, then picked up some chocolates for ourselves and gifts for friends.
