Floating Naval Museum Battleship Averof的点评
点评：We made a spur of the moment decision to visit this ship and we’re so glad we did. We knew nothing about her previously but came away inspired.
The English of the sailors/staff is spotty but there is well written English content on the signs and especially if you use the QR codes on the museum displays.
When you board, first stop into the beautiful chapel of St. Nicholas to the left of the gangplank. Not only does it speak to the faith of the crew, but the ship’s priest in World War II had a key role in saving the Avrof from destruction.
After the chapel , go below deck immediately. Most of the crew quarters and engine room have been replaced with an excellent museum that will help you understand the ship. She had a significant role in major battles against the Ottomans prior to Wor I, but my favorite story concerns the German invasion in 1940. The Greek naval commander ordered all the captains to scuttle their ships to prevent them from falling into German hands. But the ship’s priest and one of the officers led a rebellion and refused to sink their own ship. They made a daring and successful run for Alexandria. The Avrof was one of the few Greek naval ships (at least of comparable class) to survive the war, where she served in the Indian Ocean.
After you’ve viewed the museum you can come up and explore the ship up to the bridge level.
We went thinking we would stay 30 minutes and left 2 hours later. We were the only native English speakers I encountered, although there was a steady stream of visitors. There is a nice little gift shop with Avrof shirts and various commemorative items. However there is no guide to the ship in English.
