Great views over the lake and Varenna from top of the castle

点评：There seem to be a few paths up from the town of Varenna below the castle and the village. One up from the Villa its an old steep mule trail and as it had been quite wet we decide to go up via the road and across the valley past the old mill and waterfall. Be sure to use a good map/leaflet for the route we used the Wayfarer's way map as we were doing that walk, and it wasn't that clear in parts for the route to the castello so we did have to backtrack twice. As all routes up to here are quite steep and demanding this is not really any fun.
Once you get to the castle it is basically a tall tower with surrounding curtain walls. To go to the top of the tower you need good mobility but once at the top of the small keep the views over the Lake Como and the surrounding parts is superb. The garden area and other curtain walls extend a fair bit back into the hilltop and are pleasant to walk around. There is a dungeon area down in front of the Castello and it is an interesting visit, mannequins and torture scenes but when we were there a lot of the ulbs seemed blown and other areas not lit at all so hard to say what the actually effects are. There is also a cafe area where the admittance charge of 6 euros is collected. To a interesting little castle keep and gardens with superb views, so definitely worth doing whether a part of a trail walk or just a visit up from the town. There is maybe a bus that goes up from Varenna to the village to save a walk but as we were doing the walk we didn't look for it.
