点评:With its chequerboard payement, this lovely square in the centre of Corso Umberto (the hub of Taormina) is wrongly named. It was named to celebrate the arrival (on 9 April 1860) of Garibaldi at Marsala on his campaign to make Sicily part of Italy. However, Garibaldi did not land at Marsala until 9 May 1860. Notwithstanding its mis-naming, this exquisite square is flanked on one side by the Chiesa di San Giuseppe (a beautiful church framed by mountains), by the former Chiesa di San Agostine (now a public library) on another side. On the seaward side is the Belvedere di Taormina (with beautiful views out to sea). There are plenty of restaurants around and even some toilets (next to the public library). It is certainly worth spending some time here drinking in the atmosphere and enjoying the views.
