Good weekend, but plagued by poor maintenance.
Anglo Welsh Dayboat Hire的点评
点评：We've been on the canals before, but this was the first time using Anglo Welsh. It was a massively inferior holiday in comparison to the equivalent just a few minutes drive north of this location.
Maybe we had a bad boat (Lady Susan), but it was in dreadful condition considering the price.
I have come to expect a certain level of compactness when using narrowboats, and a certain level of wear when using a rented boat, but this vessel was something out of the seventies. Every flat surface on the boat was covered in an ageing varnish that gave every surface a sticky feel. There was a reasonable cooker, but no microwave. The TV, was so old it didn't have an HDMI port, but not that it it worked anyway. It never got a signal, even in the middle of Birmingham. I tried to retune it, but it picked up 0 channels every time, which made me wonder if it was even connected to the top aerial.
For our convenience there was a 1GB Wi-Fi dongle, which had overstated facts about it's usage. I unplugged it to free up one of the only two USB sockets on the boat. The TV also took up one of the only 240v two sockets on the boat.
The beds were mostly adequate for the boat, configured as two singles pushed together. There is limited storage space, but again everything is slathered in that old sticky varnish. The only downside was that the duvet cover was bigger than the duvet so you had a flap of useless cloth at the end.
There were so many missing screws in the boat. Latches that were flopping about, or just entirely missing. There were brass screws on the floor that were rolling about with no home. Some clasps were even rivetted in as the screw had worn away the hole so much. It just looked rushed and cheap.
The boat was structurally and mechanically sound, and it had a good engine and performed well when driving.
The staff at Anglo Welsh were friendly and informative. But the facilities are substandard at best. There is limited space for boats to moor at the facility, but they do say that the boat is returned by 9am. They also dictate that you are only to use the boat 8am to 8pm, which means you have an hour to return the boat in the morning. However, there is nowhere to moor nearby within that hour, except a grassy bank. This means that anyone renting a boat has to push pins into a bog to secure their boat for the night. They do provide a hammer, but the ground is so soft, you can lift the pins out of the ground with your little finger. We expected the boat to have floated away in the night.
How would I improve the quality of the boat?
- Strip off all that tacky, sticky varnish and reapply.
- Put in more plug sockets, or maybe some USB in the bedrooms to charge devices over night.
- Convert one of the drawers into a shoe store. We were constantly tripping over shoes as there were no place to store outdoor shoes, and likewise indoor shoes.
- Change the gas boiler to a diesel boiler. Get back some space by removing bulky radiators and use vents instead.
- Remove the aging TV, put in a proper system that allows people to connect their own devices. Customers will have better access to Netflix and streaming services than a ancient TV with a broken aerial.
- Fix the radio. Sticking the radio antenna to an indoor window is amateurish and looks cheap.
- Re-upholster the seats. They are threadbare and put some more back support in. Resting your back against the window bars is uncomfortable. Put some cushions in for comfort.
-Fix all the fittings. Swap all the latches for ones that look the same and change all the brass screws.
- Grease the main door so it slides easier. We don't want to have to warm up our muscles every time we want to exit the boat. That hatch is supposed to slide easily, not need two people grunting to slide it back each morning.
-When returning the boat, be a bit more generous than 9am. I know you don't have much space, but there also isn't much space about to moor safely.
Would we use Anglo Welsh again?
Probably not. At least not without seeing the boat before we part with our money. It would be nice to know that the Lady Susan was the bad exception to the rule. She was an old lady that has not aged gracefully.
