点评:Friday 16th October - We set off early for Monkey Mia, hoping to enjoy the much-publicised dolphin experience. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing and, in my opinion, poor value for money.
While I fully appreciate that dolphins are wild animals and their appearance can never be guaranteed, my concern is with the environment in which visitors are expected to view them. From my own experience, dolphins can be remarkably interactive with humans when they feel safe and are approached in a respectful, controlled environment.
Monkey Mia promotes the presence of approximately 200–300 dolphins in the surrounding area, with a small, carefully managed group of resident adult females regularly visiting the shoreline for regulated feeding sessions. However, given the conditions we witnessed, it was hardly surprising that the dolphins did not appear.
Boats were moving back and forth open bay and feeding area, while dogs could be heard barking and growling along the jetty. These disturbances hardly seem conducive to creating a calm and safe environment for wildlife. Dolphins are intelligent animals, and it is unrealistic to expect them to approach the shoreline when they may perceive potential risks, particularly when there is an abundance of natural food available in the bay.
I believe Monkey Mia should give greater consideration to the conditions in which these encounters take place and introduce a fairer policy for visitors when no dolphins appear.
While I understand that wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed, visitors are paying for the opportunity to experience something special, and there should be greater accountability when that experience does not eventuate.
Unfortunately, I left feeling that the experience was more about the commercial attraction than the welfare and natural behaviour of the dolphins.
My advice to anyone planning a trip to Western Australia specifically to see dolphins is to do your research before spending your money at Monkey Mia. Perhaps consider Tin Can Bay in Queensland as an alternative for a dolphin encounter.
A very disappointing experience that fell well short of expectations.
