点评:One perk of visiting the Museum of Anthropology was getting a discount on admission tickets (reg $7/adult) to Nitobe Memorial Garden. The garden is just a short walk away, less than 10 mins. Nitobe's summer hours were 10AM to 4:30PM, Tue to Sun, and we visited on a sunny Sun mid-afternoon.
Built in memory of Japanese author and diplomat Dr. Inazo Nitobe, this lovely and confirmed authentic Japanese garden was completed in 1960. It has a large pond with wooden bridges and koi fish, a waterfall with nearby stepping stones, a tea house, stone lanterns, garden benches, gravel paths, moss-covered grounds and a mix of local and Japanese plants and trees.
At the ticket booth, we were given a printed leaflet with an illustrated (but unlabelled) map of Nitobe Memorial Garden. We actually did not read up on this attraction before visiting so we just did a relaxed walk in a clockwise direction. It was lush and pristine everywhere you look. Lots of mature trees, plenty of shade and a few benches to sit and enjoy the view. It was easy to pretend you're in Japan. We only stayed about half an hour because we were already hungry and still had to take transit, TransLink 14 bus (adult fare, $3.35), back to downtown Vancouver.
There was no signage in the garden and apparently this was done on purpose. No washroom facilities on site but ticket booth staff should be able to provide directions to the nearest one. I only found out recently about the downloadable garden map of Nitobe from the UBC Botanical Garden website. It includes plenty of details and a counter-clockwise self-guided tour for new visitors wanting a more contemplative visit.
Again, really lovely Japanese garden and worth visiting.
