点评:Completed in 1960, the Nitobe Memorial Garden was created to honour the memory of Dr. Inazo Nitobe. Dr. Nitobe was an important diplomat, scholar, politician and writer who, amongst a host of other accomplishments, played a key role in the League of Nations and sought to “bridge” cultures across the Pacific Ocean. The overall design, renowned for its use of Japanese landscaping techniques, reflects these important values held by Dr. Nitobe. I think it is also this perfect blending of tradition, Zen and harmony that makes the Nitobe Memorial Garden my favourite site out of all the UBC-related attractions I’ve patronized this year.
My partner and I visited the Nitobe Memorial Garden after a jaunt to the UBC Botanical Garden. As soon as you walk through the entranceway of Nitobe, something amazing happens. A feeling of harmony – supreme relaxation – washes over you like an awesome wave. The dirt pathways, stone lanterns, lush carpets of moss, beautiful flora, traditional tea house, wooden bridge, central pond and strategically placed stepping stones come together in such a way that they channel traditional Japanese values – ones that promote resilience, respect and, indeed, renewal. The bridge across the large koi pond, in particular, is a central feature because it quite literally bridges two cultures: On one side of the bridge you have the flora of British Columbia; on the other side is the flora of Japan. In brief, the Nitobe Memorial Garden, through its landscaping, inspires us to reflect and think deeply (though not too deeply . . . don’t deep!), all while calming the soul.
If visiting UBC, do make time to patronize this beautiful garden. If you combine it with the Botanical Garden, you receive a slight discount!
