点评:The last review dates from ~3,5 years ago, time for an update.
I was solo accompanied by two guides. Organized by Mucumbli, dropped off at Ponta Figo and back the same route, in two days, so with camping 30 mins below the peak. This is a significant difference compared to previous reviews written by @Martin_in_Pimlico and @SJ1234029; they both started from Ponta Figo and ended at Bon Successo. Not only the trail to Bom Sucesso is longer, Mucumbli currently does not organize trekkings containing the trail between Pico and Bom Sucesso, because the trail has suffered from landslides and therefore is considered too dangerous. They might use the trail again in the future.
Day 1 (Ponta Figo - Camp) took us 5,5 hours. We could have done it a bit faster, but conditions were good and we were not in a rush, so we took regular breaks.
Day 2 (Camp - Peak - Camp): 1 hour. The view wasn't great because of the clouds (which happens often, apparently), but still very rewarding.
Day 2 (Camp - Ponta Figo): 4 hours.
I visited Sao Tome in the middle of the rain season, and I witnessed some heavy tropical showers in the days before doing the climb. I was concerned about being caught by such storms during the hike; what would we do? Mucumbli seemed less concerned, so I just trusted their experience on this.
We were lucky to have very good conditions (no rain, even sunny) on both days, until the last 2 hours of hiking. Suddenly the sky got dark and it started raining extremely heavily, and it didn't stop for 5 hours.
In case you haven't experienced such rainfall before: within 30 seconds you're soaked to the bone, within 60 seconds you're soaked to the bone marrow. There are no caves to hide, and although I don't own one, I wonder if Gore-Tex shells would keep you dry. We weren't too bothered by the rain and kept going, because we new it would be just two more hours of walking.
Now, what would have happened if this shower appeared on day one? I asked the guides. This particular shower turned out to be extraordinarily heavy, disrupting roads and temporarily creating some chaos around the North side of the island. If this would have happened the day before, we would have to return, because the trail would become too slippery.
However, "normal" tropical showers (that last 15 mins instead of 5 hours) would not have been a major problem. There's definitely an amount of rain you can take, and the trail as well. Conditions can change rapidly and unexpectedly, so you might be able to dry your clothes in the sun when you reach camp.
It's not a walk around the park; there are many strokes where you need both hands and feet. But nowhere did I feel dangerously exposed. If you're fit and up for some muscle and cardio work, you can definitely do it. And you will be rewarded by all the sounds, smell and spirit of untouched primary rain forest.
Some random remarks:
• Wear long pants.
• The route from the camp to the water point is short but extremely steep and (in my case) very slippery. I joined the guides because it happened naturally; when we came back they told me I was the first tourist who went down that way. Just relax at the camp and let the experienced guides get the water for you.
• one guide climbed Pico 20 times over the last 3-4 years. He saw the black cobra 3 times. Never did he have to return because of the weather.
