点评:Hadn't been here in decades and was looking for an autumn walk in the woods. Started at the visitor center. Not much inside. Open central space with clean rest rooms (grateful for that!), a ranger office with a window whose wooden shingle was down (but door was open so I was able to ask a question), a walk of photos, and a primitive map mounted on the wall.
Was hoping for a tra map to take. None available. I realize this cuts down on paper use and potential litter but I wasn't sure I'd be able to get (Verizon) cell service on the trails since I often lose service in southern Blackstone Valley.
My main observation is that this is not a local for an easy, mindless dip into nature. Even if you are not in an area that involves stepping over or climbing on rocks, you need to *pay attention* to 85% of the steps you take because you are walking on endless root structures, embedded stones of various sizes, and a layer of leaves and pine needles that can be slippery. This is hilly terrain.
If you are looking to be able to lose yourself in the sights or sounds of a forest, this is not the place. Constant vigilance of foot placement is required. No special footwear is needed - sneakers are fine for almost everyone, but you need to look down *constantly.*
At times I was getting dizzy watching the world fly by in my peripheral vision while my eyes were fixed on the ground to plan every step. It would be so easy to slip and sprain or fracture something, and you'd have a terrible time hiking back out.
There is insufficient signage and trail information in my opinion. The trails are marked by splotches of coloured paint on trees and sometimes on rocks embedded in the ground. There is no indication on the trail signage how long or steel the trail is - only the trail names. Nowhere except at the parking area so you find a map, and the map is one of the poorest visual representations of a trail system I've seen. It needs to be updated and stylized so that it communicates needed information much more effectively.
At one point about 30 min into our hike on the Charlie Loop, we came to an intersection of several trails with absolutely no information about any of them except their names. We started down one trail only to have to backtrack and retrace all of our steps back to the car because the second trail we turned into became nothing but a rock like that we weren't in a position climb.
We spent about 2 hours on trails and saw no wildlife, not even a squirrel. Very rarely did we hear any bird sounds and we never got got a glimpse of any birds. There is no flowing water here. What you see are trees and boulders.
We support open lands and public recreation space. The $5 parking fee for MA license plates and $20 fee for out of state plates didn't bother us but we wouldn't be thrilled to pay $20 here.
There are picnic tables sprinkled on either side of the main trafficked road that cuts through the park. Besides the visitors center, there are no other structures or manmade features.
You will get to see a nearly extinct species known as the "public pay phone" at the beginning of the chasm trail, however!
The attached photos just show the terrain and illustrate the need to watch almost every step, at least on the Charlie Loop. We chose that trail because others consisted of pure rocks.
