Great ale supermarket pies

点评：We have been here before and like the fact it is a proper pub serving well kept ale and decent pub grub. Sometimes I just don’t want a lamb rump with Dauphinois potatoes, anchovy butter Wye asparagus with a lamb bone and thyme jus.
Sometimes bangers and mash, liver and onions or a good pie hits the spot.
The problem here were the pies. The mistake we made was we all had the pies. This meant we were all disappointed. There are some great pies out there and some of the bog standard ones are made by the pub chef. It’s 99% going to be a steak and ale pie and often the pastry isn’t great. Some of the best pies are bought in. If you have a business out there and all they do is make pies then the chances are they are going to be good at it as this is all they do. These pies are supermarket pies. That’s right we all sat down to eat pies I could have bought in a supermarket. Doesn’t sound great does it. Why would you think that would even be an idea given that people like to know more about what they are eating.
These pies didn’t look great, they were very pale. The pastry was soggy and the fillings were indifferent. Only one of our party of four finished her pie. We had the very best pies at Gloucester Services recently to take away. Made somewhere in Stroud. French fillings in English pies. You need to drop the pies, believe me. The rest of the menu looked reasonable. Next time I’m in the supermarket I will be reminded of our misfortune.
