点评:Behind the unattractive grey facade of a common church hides an extraordinary artistic treasure nicknamed as Milan’s Sistine Chapel (frescoes were painted nearly the same period). This church was a female Benedictine cloistered convent (with a pause during the Napoleonic occupation), has its origins from the VIII century and it was built near the grounds of Roman era remains of the imperial palace and the chariot-racing stadium. The actual structure dates back from the XVI century when large restructure was done and the inside is separated in two parts: the first hall where believers congregate for the mass and the second was the hall of nuns where they could attend mass without being viewed by commoners divided by a partition. The frescoes depicts mostly stories of the Bible; the patrons, who financed the works were depicted along the saints as many stories related to them like the St. Francis stigmata, the beheading of St. Catherine and St. Maurice, the last one is whose the church is dedicated.
My only regret is that I didn’t visit the archaeological museum which houses mosaics, artifacts from the times when Milan was Mediolanum, an early medieval tower with frescoes, walls, should be interesting to visit if into history. Free entry but donations are highly appreciated!
Of interest:
1. Pair of unicorns on the Noah’s Ark painting, did they existed?! :D
2. A XVI century painting kind of alike to Leonardo’s Last Supper.
