点评:The Lanceston Steam Railway is built on the trackbed of of the North Cornwall Railway which closed in 1966. The best part about it is the website. We made a six hour round trip from Somerset to visit the Launceston Steam Railway and we were deeply disappointed. The railway goes from nowhere to nowhere, or rather from Launcston to Newmills, a distance of two and a half miles. It came into being because the railways founder, Nigel Bowman, rescued a narrow gauge locomotive from a slate quarry in North Wales, and after he had restored it, wanted somewhere to play with his new toy. There are five steam locomotives, four of which are "Quarry Hunslets", i.e. built by the Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds to work in the slate quarries of North Wales between 1883 and 1901. The fifth is a vertical, boiler locomotive buit in 2004. The passenger trains are all operated by steam locomotives. The museum was poorly light and dirty, the exhibits could do with a good clean. The disabled toilet would be difficult to acces for someone in a wheelchair. I am sure the staff and volunteers enjoy themselves playing trains but, as I said, we found it deeply dissappointing. We will not be returning.
