点评:My husband’s family tree drew attention to Thomas Bewick. Hubby has always wanted to visit Bewick’s birthplace and we found time to do so today. We were not disappointed. Staff/volunteers were wonderful and helpful. Their enthusiasm for this lovely place made everyone feel welcome. It might be small but there is clearly a lot being planned too, for the future.
The cottage is tucked away in the quiet Northumberland countryside. It is a modest stone farmhouse that was once home to Thomas Bewick (1753–1828), the pioneering wood engraver and naturalist.
Born and raised at Cherryburn, Bewick revolutionized printmaking with his detailed wood engravings, most famously illustrating British birds and animals with striking realism. His book A History of British Birds became an inspiration for naturalists and artists alike… even a young Charles Darwin.
While we were there we were given a printing demonstration.
Cherryburn is preserved by the National Trust, offering a glimpse into 18th-century rural life and the early years of a man who changed the art of illustration forever.
Pretty garden filled with autumn colours and so many apples, they were giving them away!
