点评：Like all medieval cities, Basel was once a walled city with each entrance guarded by a gate. Today all for the walls have been removed as well as most of the gates with only three remaining. The most prominent of those gates and the best to visit in person is the Spalen Gate on the west side of Gross Basel. All three remaining gates enter through a tower. However, the Spalen is by far the most imposing. The Spalen actually feels like a castle gate with multiple locks as you pass as well as multiple doors including the old cross bar gate with the spiky points at the bottom. While you can simply bypass in car, on foot, passing through it still feels very authentic.
The Spalen also has probably the best view from direct road approaches. Both Saint Johanne's and Saint Alban's do not align with the current roads. However, the Spalen looks as though the surrounding roads still use the gate. We visited after our stop at the University's Botanical Garden next door. These can easily be seen together as you coordinate your visit. I will say that everything I read said you could climb; however, there was no access open when we visited.
The old city gates are something you have to see when in Old Town Basel. It is good to see as many as you can. However, if you can only make one, make it the Spalen as it is best and most authentic gate to picture how the old city once looked.
