Beautiful Statement to Civic Generosity

点评：In an historic city with numerous historic structures of religious significance, it is amazing that a relatively modern church is such an important visit. However, this church not only is great part of any visit to Basel, but it is also the premier Neo-gothic structure in all of Switzerland. It is easy to think during your visit that this must have been a church used by Erasmus during his stay in Basel. This is a design credit to a relatively modern addition to this city.
It is a beautiful building both inside and out, and for Americans it may feel more authentic. For us, Neo-gothic is an important architectural style as we don't have the authentic Gothic. Just as important as the style and beauty of the building is the historical significance as this is not just any church. This is the first new church in the city of Basel since the Middle Ages built by the richest man in Switzerland to be the burial place for him and his wife.
Christoph Merian added significantly to a family fortune in banking, insurance, agriculture and pharmaceuticals, industries that continue to define the Basel area. However, what distinguished him, and this church is how he spent it. He died without heirs, so he gave his entire fortune to the City of Basel to use for the betterment and renewal of the city like a new, modern place to worship. His family home is now the community gardens and his foundation which survives today paid 3/4 of the cost to modernize the Middle Bridge in stone.
The inside is beautiful with amazing stonework, woodwork and stained glass with detail so good as to mask its age. In addition, it has one of the tallest spires in the city, but it is currently under renovation. It is a beautiful statement to civic generosity and worth a short stop during your Basel visit.
