Visit the LIDO . . .ONLY if you have the time
丽都岛的点评
点评：IF and only IF you have time while visiting Venice, you might want to check out Venice's island, The Lido, the location of the annual Venetian Film Festival. Hop on Vaporetto number 1 and take it to the end of the line: The Lido. Once docked you are faced with 3 walking options: Go LEFT and you'll walk along a quiet road to the end of the island; Turn Right, and you'll walk through a neighborhood cluttered with private tenaments. OR walk straight down the main thoroughfare and you'll be in the "heart" of the Lido, a street lined with restaurants, cafes, shops and a few private mansions. Walking to the end of this street will dead end into a beach community which thrives in the summer and off-season provides a ghostly remembrance of fun in the sun. Taking a right turn at the end of "main street" you'll notice the grand hotel, HOTEL DES BAINS, which unfortunately has fallen on hard times, and is now deserted. Story has it that a developer was considering breaking up the hotel into condos but that was back in 2010 and unfortunately it's been reduced to a deserted shell. You may recall Visconti's A DEATH IN VENICE which was filmed in this gorgeous hotel. Moving down the road, you'll discover another grand hotel, The Excelsior Hotel, which should be visited if for no other reason but to admire its whimsical Moorish architecture. The most jarring part of our visit was the ever present automobile, something that is absent in Venice. On or off season, it's fun to see another aspect of Venice. But ONLY visit the Lido if you have the time.
