Outstanding Museum, a “Must See!”

点评：This museum is an absolute MUST SEE if you are anywhere near Drobeta! I actually took a detour to see it and was so glad I did. Unlike most museums in Bucharest that are “in process” of a renovation, this museum has recently finished a ten year renovation and it shows. It’s an outstanding experience!
I could not believe the value for the entrance price - you start with the Neolithic era (amazing artifacts) and move forward through history. Of particular note is the room containing the miniature replica of Trajan’s Bridge with much info on the architect, the Dacian/Roman wars, etc. But you’ll continue local history right up till today.
But then you flow into the ethnographic area, which leads to a geological area, and just when you think there cannot possibly be more… you end up in the basement aquarium! I kid you not, an aquarium of Danube fish! And all of it is very interesting.
Then you go outside to see the last remains of the bridge, the ruins of the Roman fort, and the baths and amphitheater that have recently been discovered. What an outstanding museum and what a wonderful experience for me. The women who guide you through the museum are so welcoming as was the town itself.
You can visit in a few hours, but I’d allow a day to see both this and the reconstructed medieval fort just a few blocks up the same road. The town comes alive in the evening around the fountains in the center park, it’s well worth staying a night to really experience Drobeta.
