Pullman Observation is well worth it

点评：We visited for our Silver Wedding and treated ourselves to the Pullman Observation car at the top end of the train (this is important because it puts you right behind the loco when it’s working up hill, so you get the full benefit of the sights and sounds of steam hard at work). If seeing a steam lock hard at work isn’t your thing, stay put and on the way back down you have an uninterrupted view of the Vale of Ffestiniog as you head to Porthmadog. The seating is excellent, nice heavy armchairs that you can move, but aren’t going to shift as the train goes along. Being in first class, you have at seat service from a friendly and efficient steward who comes to take your order for drinks and snacks and brings them back to you. We had a slight delay at Tan y Bwlch caused by a loss of vacuum in the braking system, but that was sorted promptly and with good humour, and we were back underway soon enough. The turn around at Blaenau Ffestiniog is scheduled for 50 minutes but we were there for a bit less with the delay on the way up. It was still plenty of time for a comfort break and an ice cream. The railway really is the best way to see the scenery in the area and by taking a ride you’re helping to continue the preservation of one of the earliest railways of its type in the world, with some unique features, such as the double Fairlie locos. And for this year, they’ve got one in green, which is the colour they should all be. Any trip on the Ffestiniog is special, but upgrading to Pullman Observation seating is well worth the additional fare. There isn’t adequate vocabulary to convey just how much you should visit and ride on the train. It’s just the best thing you can do in the area, and it’s clear to anyone why they’ve won best Welsh tourist attraction of 2025. The only question is why they don’t win every year.
