点评:The concept of developing Naoshima as an art centre is quite brilliant, It's a beautiful island in the unforgettable Inland Sea and many residents are very friendly. However, it seems like the elaboration of that concept is a bit lacking at times and that is, in my view, visible at this museum.
Firstly, the place is just very limited. There is one room focusing on Monet (nicely done with natural light), one arranged by Walter de Maria and three small spaces by another American artist, which were underwhelming. That's it. The conceptual connection between these artists is frankly unclear.
In addition, there are somehow rigid rules that detract from the experience: the fact that you cannot enter even slightly before the designated time, for example, or that one cannot take pictures. Why, will this damage the works? No, that has nothing to do with it. The real reason seems to be that you buy the postcards at the gift shop. And when communicating these rules, the staff can border on the impolite, making visitors feel unwelcome.
With all of the strengths of Naoshima and the architecture by Tadao Ando, in my view at least, something much better should be possible.
Here, I personally had the impression that those behind the museum have a feeling for hype and a love for commerce but little passion for art.
