A surreal piece of history.
Presidio Modelo的点评
点评：I had wanted to visit the Presidio Modelo ever since I saw it on TV several years ago, so was really pleased to get the opportunity recently. The scale of the place is enormous, and you can wander freely around the main building as well as the circular cell blocks, central dining block and the work blocks near the front. The buildings are in poor condition and the roofs are partially or fully missing from some of the buildings. The cell numbers are still visible, and one can only imagine what the conditions were like in the heat, and how noisy it would have been. The circular dining room is on the first floor of the central round block, and only retains the table supports and tiled central area, which was presumably where the food was served. The museum was closed as we were visiting late in the afternoon. There are watchtowers and barbed wire around the perimeter of the site, which reminded me somewhat of certain notorious European prison camps. What was interesting was how many locals were visiting or passing through the site, as well as living just outside. We also talked to the caretaker, who told us that the former staff villas at the front were now used by a local school, as well as the former military academy just outside the main entrance. It was a fascinating insight into a turbulent period of Cuba's history.
