Visiting the medieval fortress of Severin - June 2024.

点评：In June this year we've been visiting the city of Drobeta Turnu Severin and since we were there we've payed a visit to the rebuilt medieval fortress of Severin.
Getting there is fairly simple - it does not have a designated parking lot - but you can park anywhere in the vicinity of the Dragalina park and you can walk the rest of the distance - is less than 5 minutes from any point of the Dragalina park ( in Drobeta Turnu Severin parking is free of charge).
The original fortress was built somewhere in the XI-XII-th centuries, and it is mentioned in documents in the early XIII-th century, although the historians cannot really agree on the data - also in terms of who constructed it there are is no agreement - where the knights of St. John those who built it? Was king Andrew II of Hungary the one who built it? Was the original builder a local chieftain who remained unknown? ... well this bit of information got lost in the eons of time.
What is certain - it was destroyed in 1524 by the Ottomans who were expanding in the area. The destruction was so "complete" that it stayed like that for several centuries, than in 2010 it was rebuilt to its current shape. It was not fully rebuilt to its former looks , but more to the level of an "interesting ruin".
The visitor shall pay an entry ticket - it is more a symbolic fee - the is very cheap , after that you can enter the courtyard and take a walk around , there is a small visitors center in the inner courtyard and if you are interested the curator can explain you about the place , its history and the items on display.
The only thing that for me was a bit "irrelevant" were the presence of mock-up cannon replicas, not very well executed - beside that everything else was relevant.
Overall interesting - especially for those who are interested in medieval history - it it is also the case for you , when in Drobeta you can stop here - it takes less than an hour to visit the medieval fortress Severin.
