点评:This was, without exaggeration, the highlight of our time in Florence and worth every euro. It captures so much of what makes Tuscany magical: the landscape, the food, the people, the history, and that feeling that you’ve stumbled into something truly special.
Getting there is normally very easy—a quick 20-minute train ride from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station to the beautiful village of San Miniato, which I’d strongly recommend leaving a few extra hours to explore. In our case, there happened to be a country-wide train strike that day, but Letizia and team were incredibly helpful in guiding us through the logistics and making sure we still got there without stress.
We were met at the station by the delightful Gioia, master truffle hunter Marco, and of course, Giau (?) the cute lil' truffle-hunting doggie, who was so chill we didn’t even realize he was in the back of the car until about five minutes in. From there, we drove through the narrow streets of old San Miniato and straight into the breathtaking forest surrounding the village.
Apparently this doesn’t happen for everyone, but within five minutes, Giau had already found the first truffle of the day. We went on to find two more before heading back to their lovely home, where Letizia served an unforgettable four-course, truffle-centric meal—including truffle chocolates for dessert.
I won’t spoil the details, but suffice it to say: we have all been misled by Big Truffle. Experiencing the real thing is completely different from what most of us think truffle tastes like.
The trip ended with Massimo—the truffle maestro who started it all—driving us back to the train station. By the end, it felt less like we had booked an activity and more like we had spent the day with our newfound Tuscan truffle family.
Next time we’re in Tuscany, we will absolutely make a point of coming back. Be sure to book far in advance, because they fill up quickly—and deservedly so.
