点评:I recently took a trip to Morocco with my 19 year old nephew. In planning the trip, we decided we wanted one adventure that was uniquely our own.
I have always loved fossils and have spent time hunting for them in Florida's rivers, Michigan, South Carolina, and in my native Virginia. I found a fossil forum that mentioned Mohand Ihmadi, a geologist in Alnif. We asked our tour company to arrange two half day hunts in and around Alnif. This decision culminated in the highlight of our trip.
We found some very nice trilobites, examined petroglyphs, ate exotic meat skewers in the Berber market, enjoyed feasts on the lovely grounds of Mr. Ihmadi’s home (the best Moroccan food we had on the entire trip), and gained a better knowledge of geology and fossil history. Even our driver, Kamal, was spellbound by Ihmadi - by his knowledge, his philosophy, his modest demeanor, and his easy, generous manner.
Ihmadi has built a beautiful museum at his home with fantastic specimens. He has two stores in town where he sells fossils and minerals at reasonable prices. After our fossil hunt, Mr. Ihmadi showed us how to use pneumatic Dremel tools to reveal the fossils. Ihmadi is teaching the women of his village how to do this painstaking and delicate work —removing compacted sand and clay to reveal fossils within concretions.
Sometimes it is hard to express the most thrilling aspect of an experience. Just being with this humble, knowledgeable man was a privilege. When he was young, Ihmadi’s parents thought fossils represented evil and wouldn’t let him bring them home. Who knows, maybe this prohibition made him more determined to understand, collect, preserve, and explain these ancient specimens to people from all over the world. Personally, mine was an indelible experience that I recommend to everyone.
