点评:Weather perfect, planning meticulous, food excellent, accomodation excellent, and walking challenging but doable.
We set off from Aire River (west of Cape Otway in Victoria) and went westward to the 12 Apostles. It was a 3 day walk/hike with day packs. Transport from each end of the day's walk was arranged by GOW91. We booked through them late in 2024 and was provided with all the nercesary details well in advance of our walk.
The walk itself took us through a wide variety of coastal terrains and vegetation. it was generally unspoilt bushland on a well defined track. The track itself was well marked with GOW blazes and signposts. There were campsites along the way if participants decide to bring their own gear, but we opted for accomodation for the 2 nights we were out on the track (this was in a modern 2 bedroom self contained bungalow with views across paddocks towards the 12 Apostles).
As we walked, we came across Koalas, Swamp Wallabies, a wide variety of native birds (includng the rare hooded plover, and black cockatoo) and even a goat with its kid. The vegetation included eucalypts, grass trees, coastal heath and tea tree, and a wide variety of plants I cannot describe.
The views at every turn were spectacular, with bluffs jutting into the ocean, rock ledges, beaches, and surf. The colours of the sea were vibrant and the whole experience magnificent.
It was little wonder that this is known as the shipwreck coast in Victoria as the coastline is dotted with many wrecks (not visible at all) of predominantly sailing ships bringing out cargoes from England and migrants seeking to make a new life in Australia.
Our visit to the area was topped off by a day afterwards inspecting the Cape Otway lighthouse precinct and lighthouse itself, Loch Ard Gorge, and Port Campbell. The visitor's centre at the 12 Apostles is somewhat small and limited, but the view is iconic.
The walk has its challenges but can be done after some training. We are both in our 70's and active people and covered around 50Km in the 3 days, with the second day being the most difficult with a number of ups and downs. The last day was the longest but a lot easier walking. The walk is away from modern interruptions and can be seen as remote, although communication with GOW91 via text was the main form of communication with them. We were also issued with an EPIRB if it was required.
GOW91 staff were most attentive and reponsive to our requirements. A walk that is well worth doing in Autumn or Spring.
