Plantation House National Monument的点评
点评：For an idea of La Digue's history a visit of the Old Plantation House ('Grann Kaz' in local Creole) in the Union Estate is recommended, since there is not too much left of the island's past. The grand house, which had been renovated recently and opened as a museum in 2020, probably dates in its actual form from the late 19th-early 20th century.
It has typical features of the French Colonial style, which is characterised by a steep hipped roof, here covered with palm branches, with many windows and doors (French doors) and a wrap around porch. Except for the roof cover almost everything is made from wood. In the interior one will see a big dining hall and two bedrooms. With the restoration some furniture has been added to the house, like a dining table, chairs, a dressing table, even a beverage cart. On the veranda are folding chairs.
Unfortunately no information is given about the house, which once belonged to the owners of the Union Estate, created by the widow Louise Mellon and her sons, after the then Capitaine General of the Isle de France (now 'Mauritius') had given them this land in 1807, thus just a few years before the British took over on both islands. At the house now can also be found an art gallery. Members of the Mellon family are buried at the 'Old Cemetery' on the Estate.
