点评：As part of an anniversary day trip my wife and I visited the Sayen House and Garden in Hamilton. Sayen House is a wedding and special event venue that is managed by Hamilton Township. The house is available for private rental and sits on a 30 acres garden that is free to the public. Throughout the year annual and perennial floral displays fill this garden highlighted by walking trails, small waterfalls, fountains, fishponds and gazebos all artfully displayed. Photo opportunities to make your walk through or private event special are everywhere. My wife and I have visited many gardens in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York where we paid for access and were amazed that a garden as beautiful and well-designed as this one is available free to the public and so close to home.
The Main entrance to the Sayen House and Garden and its parking lot are available on Hughes Drive. Though Sayen’s property is one garden, the layout of the garden is divided into two sections with multiple walking trails from its parking lot. In addition to a single walking trail between the two sections inside the garden beyond the Sayen House.
The section to the right takes you to the Sayen House itself which is surrounded by a circular road with walking trails emanating from it. This section contains a picturesque Koi fishpond with a white bridge and fountain in the center of that pond. Creating an excellent backdrop for photos. This section is also home to the restrooms, the Umbrella Fountain (a white stone fountain spraying water over a boy and girl huddled under an umbrella), the Brown Gazebo, the Temple Garden and Gazebo and a rustic Boardwalk through the forest. Beyond this Boardwalk is a walking trail which will eventually lead you to the left section of the garden.
The section to the left (called Labaw Pointe) has no rest rooms but consists of a winding white stoned walkway that intersects a second pond on the property. There you will find another bridge with a small waterfall, the Mercer Street Fountains which spray water upward from within the pond, The White Gazebo and a deck overlooking this second pond. If you take the walkway that leads to Mercer Street at the gardens perimeter and walk along Mercer Street toward Hughes Drive, you will be rewarded with another view of the Mercer fountains and the waterfall.
It took us about an hour to walk the entire garden. We did not enter the Sayen House itself since access is only allowed for private party rentals and is not free to the public. But we were greatly impressed with the design and elegance of this small garden. In addition, we noticed that the park is well patrolled by park and maintenance personnel. There was always a park representative sitting on a bench in the parking lot, and one stationed at the Sayen house itself. We saw others wandering the park in both sections.
The park is mostly flat and is an easy hike. It is also used by kids riding bicycles, which is permitted. Dogs walkers are permitted in the park if the dogs are on a leash, however dogs are not allowed within the Sayen House. At first, we thought the map and trails would be hard to follow, especially near the Sayen House section, but there are signs directing you to the major attractions of the garden and the restrooms which made following the paths easy.
Maps of the garden are available online on the Hamilton Township WEB site and I recommend you print out a copy before you go. I enlarged this printout into two pages to make it easier to follow. (There is a box for maps on site near the Sayen house which was empty when we arrived at the garden. Though there is a QR code on the outside of that map box you can scan with your phone to view the trail map.)
